Stove-Top Moka Pot

Coffee brewing method: Filter coffee
Difficulty level: Medium
Brewing Time: 10 minutes
Ratio: 75-80g/l
Grind: Fine/Medium

The Moka Pot is a stove-top coffee maker, boils water from the bottom of a chamber, to create espresso-style coffee without the need  for a large professional espresso machine.

1. Boil Your Kettle

Boil your kettle. Fill the base of your Moka Pot up to the top mark with the hot water. Using hot water in a Moka pot avoids giving the coffee a "metallic" taste, which is often a result of boiling cool water in a Moka pot and burning the coffee.

2. Add Coffee

Add coffee of your choice. Use Fine/Medium grind. Coarser than espresso, but finer than filter. Use enough coffee to fill the filter basket. For a 4-Cup Moka pot put about 15-17g (2.5 tbs). DO NOT tamp or pack down the grounds. Leave them loose, the water needs to be able to flow through the coffee freely.

3. Prep

Carefully place the filter basket in to the base. Use the kitchen gloves or tea towel to hold the base with boiling water, screw on the top chamber.

4. Brew

Turn on your stove on medium heat. Place your Moka Pot on top of your stove. When you hear water to start boil in the base, lower the heat. Keep controlling the heat to keep the coffee flowing out smoothly. As the bottom chamber starts to empty there will be some spitting and spluttering. This is normal.

5. Final step

Once you hear a hissing sound and the top chamber is full take the Moka Pot off the heat and serve immediately. Leave it to cool and ENJOY!
